Theatr Byd Bychan

Small World Theatre is an artist-led emergent organisation, a self-organising entity. Constantly evolving, contracting and expanding, it is a complex system. Small World Theatre has 3 main streams of activity: Producing and performing our own original shows and events: creating theatre performances that can tour small and mid scale venues. Street shows and site-specific spectaculars as well as intimate, environmentally sensitive experiences. Running our own venue: presenting a range of arts and performance events, mentoring emerging artists/performers, hosting conferences, community events, classes and workshops. The building is an accessible, welcoming space that provides a model of sustainability for other organisations striving towards a zero carbon future. Implementing projects and facilitating workshops: developed and delivered in house, in the community by us and for other agencies. Designing and delivering international projects in arts and theatre for development. We facilitate workshops, design and deliver our own accredited training programmes and also for other organisations. These programmes build skills and confidence with people of different ages and abilities. We are pioneers in developing and using methodologies now increasingly called SEED SCALE

I hold a distinction in Masters level Fine Art from Swansea Met, along with a BSc in Human Sciences from University College London. My work has been recognised by both The Bath Royal Society of Artists and the Welsh Artist of the Year competition (winner of the student category in 2010). I was also featured as a cover Artist for AN magazine in April 2012 and selected by AXIS as one of the top five graduating artists in Wales in 2011 and 2012. Inspired by my unusual perspective as a colour-blind artist and my background in human sciences, my work has developed from observational painting and drawing to consider perception in a much wider sense. I use a multi-media approach, which includes, painting, drawing, film-making, audio, working with the public and public engagement. My work combines bold aesthetics with conceptual interest created through extensive research in philosophy, science and art history.

In 2009, I decided (not due to redundancy) that I wanted to move away from work in publishing to find new successes in teaching, making and most honestly, to live a more varied creative life, for this I emigrated to Wales. In Pembrokeshire, I teach creative awareness and OCN art courses for adult learners, NEET, children of all ages and lead workshops county-wide. From my own studio, cheese and pickles, I lead intensive workshops which help to prepare individuals in their own careers in design an illustration. For my own creative expression, I work as a painter, printmaker and collage relief artist, drawing inspiration from my surroundings, medieval and Celtic art, Welsh language, history, and beliefs. I have been a lead artist for Cauldrons and Furnaces 2012, held an artist-in-residency, and show in public and private galleries. My work is held in private collections around the world.

Celfwaith

Celfwaith is a public art consultancy. Our aim is to promote and develop the artist’s role in the public realm. Through working in partnership we can raise ambition and deliver inspiring projects that make a positive contribution to our environment and our communities. We provide a number of services including: Project Management Exhibition curation Strategy development Policy development Public art training Fundraising We're also happy to provide advice on specific aspects of public art projects such as budgets or contracts. Our areas of expertise include art in regeneration, art in hospitals, and art and architecture. We are particularly interested in finding opportunities for craftspeople to work on a larger scale and establishing creative collaborations between artists and architects and engineers. Recent projects: Riverside Walkway, SA1 Having produced a public art strategy for SA1, Celfwaith began the process of implementing proposals. Craig Wood and Perry Roberts were commissioned to devise a series of works for the Riverside Walkway which would create an interesting trail to arouse the curiosity of pedestrians and provide surprises. The history of the docks was the subject, but to be interpreted in a contemporary way. The series of works include ships names grit-blasted into the walkway of ships registered in Swansea since 1824, boulders placed along the river's edge etched with motifs referring to the manufacture, export and import of goods from the docks, e.g. the chemical symbols for carbon, copper and iron, and floral patterns from Swansea's ceramics. 'tattoo carpet' designs etched and painted in the paving composed of historical maritime tattoos and those worn by Swansea residents today. Ysbyty Cwm Cynon Celfwaith was appointed by Cwm Taf Health Trust to produce a commissioning plan and to implement public art commissions for the new Ysbyty Cwm Cynon. A broad theme of 'bringing the outside in' had been suggested by HLM Architects and the hospital's footprint echoed the curve of the nearby river Cynon. The building was designed to harness the use of natural daylight with a particular sensitivity to the surrounding landscape, therefore texture, material and the play of natural light were also key considerations when forming the artists' briefs. Five artworks were commissioned: Atrium relief sculpture by Kathy Dalwood Lightwell architectural glass by David Pearl Sculptural seating and landscaping for the courtyard by Walter Jack Studio Glass and textile panels for the corridor walls by Laura Thomas Photographic work on diasec panels for the restaurant area by Pascal Dubois Discover the Valleys Ten artists were commissioned to create images for advertising posters to promote the South Wales Valleys under the slogan 'Discover the Valleys'.

Sefydliad y Glowyr Coed Duon

Blackwood Miners’ Institute (The ‘Stute) is a vibrant and professional theatre, and one of the busiest in the South Wales Valleys; it is also the only professional theatre in Caerphilly County Borough. Originally the building opened as a snooker hall that was owned by the Coal Industry and the Social Welfare Organisation. The first stones were laid in 1925 and it was paid for out of the Oakdale Miners’ wages at 3d a week. Original events staged in the building included tea dances, snooker/billiards, reading groups, rehearsals and union meetings for local miners. After falling into disrepair in the 1970’s-1980’s and following many of the local pit closures, the building was conveyed as a charitable trust in 1990 to Islwyn Council. It was refurbished and reopened in February 1992 as a community arts and entertainment venue thanks to funding from Islwyn Borough Council and the Welsh Office. The history alone gives the building a place at the heart of the community. In 2011/2012 a total revamp of the Blackwood Miners’ Institute commenced, with Caerphilly County Borough Council's Cabinet approving a three year programme of repairs to give the theatre a new bill of health. Today, The ‘Stute offers a wide range of events, including drama, dance, live music, opera, children’s literature and comedy, as well as providing a wide range of opportunities for people from all sectors of the community to take part in creative activities. Blackwood Miners’ Institute is part of Caerphilly County Borough Council and has recently been awarded Arts Portfolio status by Arts Council Wales.

Pea Restall

Making, drawing and painting are part of me. I cannot separate my work from life, or my life from the work. When I am intrigued, influenced or dominated by an idea, it splashes into the work through painted imagery, repeated pattern, or symbols as I can become totally immersed in the materials. Each sculpture is created through maquettes, drawings.and then developed through hand building forms, and using found and created moulds using my own combinations of clays and often paperclay, and fired to 1100- 1200, and decorated with oxides/majolica glaze. I also often incorporate found and altered mixed media into pieces/structures/installations. My current subject matter is experimentation with altering the human form, considering- what makes us appear human, and which features of the body are important to express gesture/emotion/attitude? I am also interested in challenging the perception of any ceramics as ‘everyday objects’, which often dismisses the 1,000s of years of tradition in developing techniques, forms and surfaces, and disregards the need for current makers in clay to develop these skills to produce fired ceramic work. I exhibit work in galleries throughout the UK, I exhibited at The Santorini Biennale (Greece) 2012 (with assistance from the Arts Council of Wales) and was awarded the joint 1st prize at The Royal Cambrian Academy Open (Conwy) January 2014 for an installation piece Mother Mary Chess set.

Yn fy nhrydedd flwyddyn yn y coleg celf yn Cheltenham gwelais baentiadau gan Jason Martin a chefais fy hudo gan y ffordd y mae goleuni yn adlewyrchu oddi ar wyneb yr alwminiwm. Byth ers hynny, rwyf wedi bod yn dod o hyd i ffyrdd o drin y paent ar fetel, arllwys i wneud haenau tryloyw cain, gan ddefnyddio hen frwsys garw iawn ar gyfer gwead a marciau. " "Pan wnes i orffen y Cwrs Celf Sylfaenol yng Nghaerdydd bron i mi ymgeisio am y cwrs gwydr yn Abertawe. Uniongyrchedd paent, ei felyster a'i ffurf a enillodd y dydd. Nawr, ar ôl 18 mlynedd gydag alwminiwm rwyf wedi dechrau gwaith newydd ar wydr. " "Ar hyn o bryd dw i'n disgwyl cymeradwyaeth gan gleient corfforaethol yn Tsieina. Fy nghynnig yw gosod gwydr sy'n cyfuno darluniad a phaentiad o ddail yn fy ngardd. Rwy'n credu y bydd y llinellau meddal a'r lliwiau yn 'dyneiddio' eu tu mewn marmor. Gobeithio y byddant yn meddwl hynny hefyd! " Sefydloadd Julia ei stiwdio yng Nghaerdydd yn 2000. Er hynny mae wedi adeiladu enw da yn rhyngwladol. YANC is an embryonic network which started life in response to the youth arts sector lacking any sort of cohesive thinking and sharing of practice across Wales. Initially the network was formed on the basis of various companies who were initially involved in a project. However this quickly grew as there was a genuine appetite amongst practitioners and organisations alike to develop practice and networks pan Wales. YANC has now become a genuinely pan Wales network which involves both Welsh and English speaking companies and individuals. It regularly hosts skills and practice sharing workshops across Wales as well as its biennial CASGLIAD conference.
